We all know we have been struggling with COVID 19 for the entire 2020.

Here we provide you some useful tips to prevent spread in winter, which is bound to get worse due to the following reasons:

  • Reduced humidity: Cold temperatures and low humidity promote the accelerated transmission of viruses.
  • The researchers found that low humidity hindered the immune response as follows:

a) It prevents cilia, (hair-like structures in airway cells), from removing viral particles and mucus.

b) It also reduces the ability of airway cells to repair damage caused by the virus in the lungs.

c)  Interferons or signaling proteins released by virus-infected cells are prevented from alerting the neighboring cells to the viral threat. In the low-humidity environment, this innate immune defense system fails.

  • Increased dryness in the air causes more prevalence of flu-like illnesses.
  • Staying indoors in closed spaces for long periods causes increased susceptibility to infections.
  • Low sunlight leads to Vit D deficiency which makes us prone to more infections due to lower immunity.
  • During winter months, sweat evaporates more rapidly, the cooler temperature can also reduce the body’s thirst response and that can result in dehydration.

PREVENTION

a) Consider buying a hygrometer and keep track of temperature and humidity in closed spaces.

b) Consider keeping a humidifier at home, school, work etc…can be a potential strategy to reduce flu symptoms and speed recovery.

c) Open windows and doors frequently to prevent the build of infections in closed spaces.

d) Eat warm foods especially soups and vegetables to keep your immune system up.

e) Stay hydrated, make a conscious effort to drink water.

f) Ensure  maintaining optimum levels of Vitamin D
